What “bad credit” means on this page

Base FICO Scores run from 300 to 850. FICO generally labels scores below 580 as “Poor,” 580–669 as “Fair,” 670–739 as “Good,” 740–799 as “Very Good,” and 800+ as “Exceptional.” Lenders can use different score models and their own underwriting thresholds, so FICO

A low score changes price and lender set, but payment still has to work

The cost impact can be substantial. The chart below is intentionally illustrative: it holds principal and term constant to show how APR alone changes total repayment. It is not a rate quote and does not imply that any listed APR is available to a particular user.

Soft inquiry vs hard inquiry

CFPB distinguishes soft inquiries from hard inquiries. A soft inquiry does not affect credit scores, while a hard inquiry can. A platform may let a user check or prequalify with a soft inquiry and a lender may later use a hard inquiry for a formal application. CFPB_INQUIRY

Compare product routes for bad credit

RouteWhy it may be relevantMain trade-off
Personal/installment lender with soft prequalificationLets user inspect possible terms before a formal application where offeredRates/fees can still be high and final approval may require a hard inquiry
Credit union / PALSmall-dollar amortizing alternative where membership/product is availableMembership and amount limits
Secured or co-borrower routeMay improve access or price for some borrowersCollateral or another person’s obligation creates additional risk
Earned wage / paycheck advanceCan bypass conventional score-driven lending when wages are already earnedAccess limits and app/employer fees/conditions
Payday product where lawfulMay be available with weak creditVery short repayment window and high cost; state rules vary

Prepare the evidence pack before applying

  • Government-issued identity evidence requested by the provider.
  • Recent income evidence or bank deposits that match what you report.
  • Current housing and debt-payment amounts for an affordability check.
  • Bank account or payment method if the product requires it.
  • A realistic amount based on the actual gap, not the maximum offered.

Warning signs that matter more when credit is weak

The FTC warns about lenders or brokers that promise credit regardless of history and then demand an upfront processing, insurance or application payment to guarantee the loan. A fee charged as part of a legitimate credit process is not automatically a scam; the red flag is paying upfront for a guaranteed loan. FTC_ADVANCE

If you are declined or no match is found

A no-match means the current routing set did not produce a route; a lender denial is the creditor’s decision. The next step can be correcting data, reducing the amount, using a different product with a soft check, waiting to improve the file, using a secured/co-borrower path if appropriate, or taking a non-loan route.
